Responsive Classroom
Stop and Think Explained
Stop and Think is a strategy used in our classroom to help children learn and practice self-control. It is used consistently, calmly and in a non-punitive way. Stop and Think helps maintain clear limits for behavior, preserves the integrity of the student and allows our classroom to function smoothly.
"Stop and Think allows children to make mistakes within the guardrails of adult controls. Most importantly, it contributes to creating an environment that is safe and orderly, one that is conducive to learning."
Stop and Think is used "in the moment" when someone has made a mistake or broken a classroom rule. Stop and Think is not a punishment. Instead, it is a way for children to stop the undesirable behavior, think about what is expected, gather themselves and rejoin the group in a calm and respectful manner.
