Math
More Number Stories: As students continue to tell and solve number stories, they are learning strategies for solving addition and subtraction problems and are becoming acquainted with mathematical language and symbols. Number stories provide a bridge from spoken language to mathematical symbolic language.
Coins and Values: We have been learning about coin names and values at school. So far we have talked about pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters. Children enjoy figuring out how many pennies are in a nickel or dime and how many dimes make a dollar, but they still need reminders and practice. We will continue to explore money throughout the rest of the year. At home, encourage your child to find and use coins. They can sort them by attributes (color, size, markings) and even help pay for items at the store. Ask them to teach you our Money Song too!

A penny is one cent
A penny is one cent.
Oh, yes I know,
It is so.
A penny is one cent.
Cha-Cha!

Field Day
Mark your calendars. Field Day is May 28th! To support activities the whole school will be enjoying, we have started a Field Day Fund. Here's how your child can participate:
Field Trip
We are planning to visit the Worcester Ecotarium with Pre-1st friends from Miller and Robinson School and need 2-3 parent volunteers. (Please be aware that
Westford Public Schools requires all field trip chaperones to abide by the fingerprinting obligation. Instructions on scheduling an appointment may be found at http://westfordk12.us/pages/hrm/fingerprinting.) If you are interested in volunteering for this trip please let me know. We would love to have you join us!

- Each time your child reads at home they earn a small amount of change.
- Bring the change and the Pennies for Pages form to school by May 1st.
- Each donation will be marked on a class chart to show our support for Field Day!
