Curriculum Corner
Language Arts - We are having fun exploring literary elements. Recently, we read Turkey Trouble and Turkey Claus, by Wendi Silvano. Throughout our reading we stopped to share our thinking and talked about the characters, setting, problem, solution. We worked together to create a venn diagram comparing and contrasting the similarities and differences between the two books. It was great see how students understanding of literary elements has evolved. I was impressed! During Writer's Workshop, students explored persuasive writing. Acting as 'the turkey' they tried to persuade classmates and teachers to eat something other than turkey for Thanksgiving dinner. We are looking forward to writing about spending a day with a snowman.
Math - Telling and Solving Number Stories: A “number story” is another name for a “story problem.” We have been creating and solving many number stories at school. Encourage your child to figure out answers to real-life situations such as “You and your brother can each have 2 cookies. How many cookies should I take out of the cookie jar?” or “I already put two napkins on the table. How many more do I need for our family?” Encourage your child to make up number stories for you to solve. Have fun!
Winter Celebration
Our winter celebration has been rescheduled for Monday, December 22nd from 1:45-2:45. During this exciting time, students will play a game, enjoy a healthy snack and make a craft together. If you are interested in helping out or donating supplies, please let me know.
Hats off for Cancer
During the month of December, the Nab Kindergarten will conduct a hat drive entitled “Hats off for Cancer”. All hats collected will be donated to young cancer patients at Children’s Hospital in Boston. All hats MUST be brand-new and logo friendly. Hats should also be kid-friendly (something kids would enjoy wearing). The hats do not have to be winter hats. They can be any type of hat that a child would enjoy wearing such as a baseball cap or a sun bonnet. Please place all new hats in individual Ziplock bags when bringing them into school. Our kindergarten friends will begin collecting hats this week. Their collection will end on Wednesday, December 18th. Please help students bring a little joy to a sick child during this special time of year.
Conferences
I enjoyed meeting with you during conferences. Having the opportunity to talk with you about the growth and progress your child is making this year was great. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. A strong parent-teacher relationship is critical to your child’s success. Thank you for your support.
Reminder...
Please be sure to send your child to school with a winter coat, hat & mittens. If there is snow on the ground students are not allowed on the field unless they have snow pants and boots. They are welcome to leave an extra set at school too.
