Language Arts - Students are working smart during their Daily Five practice. It is so great to see students learning, fully engaged and having fun with various literacy activities.
What is Daily Five?
Daily Five “is a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence.” There are five components to this structure. We typically do two or three during our literacy block.
Math – Students have been working with the “tricky teen” numbers. We have learned that a teen numbers represents 10 and some more. For example, 14 means 10 and 4 more, 16 means 10 and 6 more. To help students conceptualize this idea, we created black and orange teen number chains and displayed them in our classroom. The teen number chains made great Halloween decorations too! We have been busy playing coin matching games, learning about ten frames, estimating and solving number stories as well.
Happy Halloween
On Friday, October 31st, Room 9 will celebrate with a Halloween party. Students will participate in Halloween themed crafts and games. We will also enjoy a fun snack (following our new health guidelines). If you are interested in contributing to the party, please let me know.

Daily Five “is a structure that helps students develop the daily habits of reading, writing, and working independently that will lead to a lifetime of literacy independence.” There are five components to this structure. We typically do two or three during our literacy block.
- Read to Self: The best way to become a better reader is to practice reading each day. Your child is reading books he or she chooses as well as “good fit” books at their reading level.
- Read to Someone: Reading to someone allows your child time to practice reading strategies, work on fluency and expression and check for understanding. Your child can hear his or her own voice and share the joy of reading with others.
- Listen to Reading: When your child listens to reading he or she can hear examples of good literature and fluent reading. Your child hears more words thus expands their vocabulary and becomes a better reader.
- Work on Writing: Giving your child the opportunity to write each day makes them better writers. They become more confident in their ability to write and begin to see themselves as authors and illustrators.
- Word Work: Working with words helps your child learn to spell and recognize sight words as well as spelling patterns. It helps them become fluent spellers which helps with the writing process.
